The Sinulog 2011 Experience: Vesperas

Basilica Minore del Santo Niño Pilgrim Center

Every 3rd Sunday of January, we celebrate the feast of our "Balaang Bata sa Sugbu" (Holy Child of Cebu) Señor Santo Niño. We started the celebration with the first day of His Novena masses (usually the first Thursday of the month) and then followed by a solemn procession called, "Walk with Jesus."

The highlight of the celebration of the Fiesta Senyor occurs on the Vesperas (the day before the actual feast). Early morning, we have the Fluvial Procession of the image of the Holy child Jesus together with His mother, our patron, the Lady of Guadalupe.

as seen on Magallanes Street.

The afternoon that followed was the solemn procession of the image of the Señor Santo Niño. Just like in any procession of the Catholic Church, it starts and ends in the church.

Pilgrims and devotees from all walks of life including those from educational institutions, business and government sectors, parishes, etc. joined together in honoring the Holy Child.
Mi Compañeros!

On this picture, I was joined with two of my Senior Scouts, Sct. Shawn Martinito and Sct. Carlos Arsenal Jr., and a troop of Girl Scouts from Abellana National School.

Rain poured so heavily this afternoon, but devotees like us, never showed hesitation of not completing the course. The spirit of the Señor Santo Niño guided us in fulfilling our first duty as a Scout, "Duty to God."

But when we were able to reach the end of the route, we decided not to get inside the basilica anymore since there were REALLY very many people inside already, we were very wet and I was afraid that my Scouts would eventually get sick. So we finished the procession at the nearest Church, the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral.
Just as I reminded them, "even though we couldn't end at the basilica, I know the Señor Santo Niño would understand. Anyways, the procession of the Catholic Church has to start and end at a church. Unfortunately for us, we have to end here. Also, you both still have to take a rest for the Sinulog Grand Parade tomorrow."
Thank you Señor Santo Niño .. Viva Pit Señor!
